Armament one 37.2mm Skoda vz 34 gun and co-axially mounted 7.92mm (0.31in) ZB 35 or 37 machine gun plus one front mounted 7.92mm (0.31in) ZB 35 or 37 machine gun. First built in 1935.  Taken over by the Wehrmacht  and designated Panzerkampfwagen 35(t).  Saw use by Germany in the battle for France.  Used compressed air to assist transmission and steering.  This system was susceptible to failure in low operating temperatures.

TNH P-S, Czechoslovakia

Crew 4, max road speed 26 mph, range 125 miles, One Praga EPA six-cylinder water-cooled inline petrol engine 150hp, weight 9700kg (21385lb), length 14ft 11in, width 7ft, height 7ft 7in, fording 3ft, gradient 60 per cent, vertical obstacle 2ft 7in, trench 6ft 2in.  Armament one 37.2mm Skoda A7 gun and two 7.92mm (0.31in) machine guns.  Adopted as the standard light tank by the Czech army in 1938.  Production taken over during the German occupation.  Two variants produced for the Wehrmacht, Panzerkampfwagen 38(t) Ausf S and 38(t) Ausf G.  Used by Germany in the battle for France.

Panzerkampfwagen (PzKpfw) I Ausf B, Germany

Crew 2, max road speed 25mph, road range 87 miles, one Maybach NL 38 TR six-cylinder petrol engine 100hp, weight 6000kg (13230lb), length 14ft 6in, width 6ft 9in, height 5ft 8in, fording 1ft 11in, gradient 60 percent, vertical obstacle 1ft 2in, trench 4ft 7in.  Armament twin 7.92mm (0.31in) machine guns.  Built from 1934.   Was soon realised that it was not suited to front line service due to the light armament.  As no longer in service as a light tank the chassis were used for various conversions including munitions carrier and anti-tank role. 

Panzerkampfwagen (PzKpfw) II Aus F,Germany

Crew 3, max road speed 34 mph, road range 125 miles, one Maybach six-cylinder petrol engine 140hp, weight 10000kg (22046lb), length 15ft 3in, width 7ft 6.5in, height 6ft 7.5in, fording 2ft 10in, gradient 50 percent, vertical obstacle 1ft 5in, trench 5ft 9in.  Armament one 20mm cannon and one 7.92mm (0.31in) machine gun.  The Ausf A variant was first built in 1935.  The Ausf F version, the final production variant,  appeared in 1940.   Used during the Polish campaign.  Once obsolete the chassis were adopted for other uses, such as a self-propelled anti-tank, known as a Marder I.   

Panzerkampfwagen (PzKpfw) III Ausf M, Germany

Crew 5, max road speed 25 mph, road range 110 miles, one Maybach HL 120 TRM 12-cylinder petrol engine 300 hp, weight 22300kg (49160lb), length 18ft 1.5in, width 9ft 8in, height 8ft 2.5in, fording 2ft 8in, gradient 60 percent, vertical obstacle 2ft, trench 8ft 6in.  Armament one 75mm L/24 gun, one 7.92mm (0.31in) machine gun.  The first versions were built from the mid 1930's and had a 37mm gun.  Provision in the design was made for upgrading to a 50mm gun.  Those fitted with the 37mm gun were later fitted with the 50mm gun. 

Panzerkampfwagen (PzKpfw) IV Ausf H, Germany

Crew 5, max road speed 24 mph, road range 125 miles, one Maybach HL 120 TRM 12-cylinder petrol engine 300 hp, weight 25000kg (55115lb), length 19ft 4in, width, 10ft 9.5in, height 8ft 9.5in, fording 3ft 3in, gradient 60 percent, vertical obstacle 2ft, trench 7ft 3in.  Armament one 75mm gun, two 7.92mm (0.31in) machine guns.  First production model built 1936.  Last production model, Ausf J, built in 1944.  About 9000 vehicles built.  Various specialist models were built, including anti-aircraft, self-propelled gun, bridge layer and recovery vehicles. 

Panzerkampfwagen (PzKpfw) V Panther Ausf A, Germany

Crew 4, max road speed 29 mph, road range 110 miles, one Maybach HL 230 P 30 12-cylinder diesel engine 700 hp, weight 45500kg (100310lb), length 22ft 7in, width 11ft 3in, height 10ft 2in, fording 5ft 7in, gradient 60 percent, vertical obstacle 3ft, trench 6ft 3in. Armament long-barrelled 75mm gun and three 7.92 (0.31in) machine guns.  First built in 1943.  Only 4800 built.   First action was at the Kursk tank battle.  Hampered with mechanical problems and too few built.   

Panzerkampfwagen (PzKpfw) VI Tiger Ausf E, Germany

Crew 5, max road speed 24 mph, road range 62 miles, one Maybach HL 230 P 45 12-cylinder petrol engine 700 hp, weight 55000kg (121550lb), length 20ft 4in, width 12ft 3in, height 9ft 3.25in, fording 3ft 11in, gradient 60 percent, vertical obstacle 2t 7in, trench 5ft 11in.  Armament 88mm KwK 36 gun and two 7.92mm (0.31in) MG 34 machine guns.  1350 vehicles built from August 1942 to August 1944.  It was a tank of outstanding design yet suffered from being too complicated.  The overlapping wheel design was prone to clogging, particularly in the winter on the Eastern front

Panzerkampfwagen (PzKpfw) VI Tiger II Ausf B, Germany

Crew 5, max road speed 24 mph, road range 68 miles, one Maybach HL 230 P 30 12-cylinder petrol engine 700 hp, weight 69700kg (153660lb), length 23ft 9.75in, width 12ft 3.5in, height 10ft 1.5in, fording 5ft 3in, gradient 60 percent, vertical obstacle 2ft 10in, trench 8ft 2in.  Armament long-barrelled 85mm KwK 43 gun, two 7.92mm (0.31in) MG 34 machine guns.  First produced December 1943.  First saw action in May 1943 on the Eastern front and soon after at Normandy.  The Tiger II was known as the Royal or King Tiger.  Excellent heavy armour for protection but bulky to move on the battlefield and unreliable. 

Fiat (Carro Armato) L 6/40, Italy

Crew 2, max road speed 26 mph, range 124 miles, one SPA 18D four-cylinder petrol engine 70hp, weight 6800kg (14991lb), length 12ft 5in, width 6ft 4in, height 6ft 8in, fording 2ft 8in, gradient 60 percent, vertical obstacle 2ft 4in, trench 5ft 7in.  Armament Breda model 35 20mm cannon and one Breda model 38 8mm (0.315in) machine gun.  First built in 1939.  Mainly used by reconnaissance and cavalry divisions.  Only 283 were produced and there was a flame thrower variant.

Fiat (Carro Armato M 13/40), Italy

Crew 4, max road speed 20mph, range 125 miles, one SPA TM40 eight-cylinder diesel engine 125hp, weight 14000kg (30865lb), length 16ft 2in, width 7ft 3in, height 7ft 10in, fording 3ft 3in, gradient 70 percent, vertical obstacle 2ft 8in, trench 6ft 11in.  Armament one 47mm gun, one Modella 38 8mm machine gun and one twin Modello 8mm machine guns.  Built in 1940.  A total of 779 were produced.  Many captured vehicles were used by the British army in Africa. 

Type 95, Japan
