Consolidated B-24J Liberator, USA

Eight/Ten-seat daylight heavy/medium bomber, max speed 290mph, four Pratt & Whitney R-1830-65 radial piston engines 1200hp, range 2000 miles, ceiling 28000ft, span 110ft, length 67ft 2in, height 18ft, armament twin 12.7mm (0.5in) in nose, tail, aft of cockpit and under central fuselage, single 12.7mm (0.5in) in beam positions, 8800lb bomb load.  Pictured is a RAF Liberator flown from India.  Liberators were the most built American aircraft of the and the most built 4-engined aircraft ever.  This excellent aircraft was over shadowed by the more famous B-17, but was as good as or better than a B-17.

Ten-seat heavy strategic bomber. max speed 358mph, four Wright R-3350-57 radial piston engines 2200hp, range 4100 miles, ceiling 31800ft, span 142ft 3in, length 99ft, height 29ft 7in, armament four-gun 12.7mm (0.5in) over nose, two-gun 12.7mm (0.5in) under nose, under and over rear fuselage, one 2omm and two 12.77mm (0.5in) in tail, 20000lb bomb load.  Entered service about October 1943.  With the first raids from India in early 1944.  The aircraft used remote controlled turrets.

Seven-seat land-based naval bomber, max speed 272mph, two Mitsubishi MK4P Kasei 21 radial piston engines 1800hp, range 3765 miles, ceiling 29365ft, span 82ft 0.25in, length 67ft 7.375in, height 19ft 8.25in, armament two 7.7mm (0.303in) Type 92 MGs in nose, one 7.7mm (0.303in) Type 92 MGs in side blisters, one 20mm Type 99 cannon in dorsal and tail turret, 2205lb of bombs or one 1764lb torpedo.  Pictured is a G4M3 and flew with Yokosuka Kokutai, Atsugi.  Prototype first flew October 1939.

Five-seat medium bomber, max speed 271mph, two Junkers Jumo 211F inverted V-12 piston engines 1350hp, range 1212 miles, ceiling 21980ft, span 74ft 1.75in, length 53ft 9.5in, height 13ft 1.25in, armament one 20mm MG FF cannon in nose, one 13mm (0.51in) MG 131 in dorsal position, two 7.92mm (0.31in) MG 15 in rear ventral gondola and two 7.92mm (0.31in) MG81 in beam positions, 4409lb internal and 4409lb external bomb load.  Pictures is a He-111H-6 of KG26.  First flew February 1935.  This was the main bomber of the Luftwaffe with many sub variants produced.

Heinkel He-177A-5/R2 Grief, Germany

Six-seat heavy bomber, max speed 303 mph, two Daimler-Benz DB610A-1/B-1 paired inverted V-12 piston engines 2950hp, range 3418 miles, ceiling 26245ft, span 103ft 1.75in, length 66ft 11.75in, span 20ft 11.75in, armament one 7.92mm (0.31in) MG 81 in nose, one 13mm (0.51in) MG 131 in forward dorsal and rear dorsal turret, and rear ventral gondola, one 20mm MG FF cannon in front ventral gondola and tail turret, 13228lb bombs or two Hs 293 missiles.  Started operational trials July 1942.  This type would have carried the German atomic bomb.

Dornier Do 217M-1, Germany

Four-seat bomber, max speed 348mph, two Daimler-Benz DB 603A inverted V-12 piston engines 1750hp, range 1555 miles, ceiling 31180ft, span 62ft 4in, length 55ft 9.25in, height 16ft 3.5in, armament eight 7.92mm (0.31in) MG 81 and two 13mm (0.51in) MG 131, up to 8818lb bomb load.  Pictured Do 217E-2 of KG2 9.Staffel 1941.  First flew August 1938.    The Do 217E entered operation service March 1941.

Four-seat medium/dive bomber, max speed 280mph, two Junkers Jumo 211J-1 or 211J-2 inverted V-12 piston engines 1340hp, range 1696 miles, ceiling 26900ft, span 65ft 7.5in, length 47ft 2.33in, height 15ft 11in, armament up to seven 7.92mm (0.31in) MG 15 or MG 81 and an external-external 7935lb bomb load .  Pictured Ju 88A-4 of I/KG54 "Totenkopf" based in Italy September 1943 with disruptive white streaking over the standard Mediterranean camouflage.  Entered operation service about August 1939. Many late in the war were converted to be the explosive component of the Mistel composite aircraft.
