USS Langley (CV.1)

Converted fleet collier.  Speed 14 knots, 1-shaft steam turbo-electric delivering 7150shp, 14700 tons full displacement, length 545ft 4in, beam 65ft 6in, draught 24ft, armament four 127mm (5in) guns, 30 fighters (1923), 410 complement.  Trialled in July 1922, converted to seaplane carrier 1937, used as a aircraft transport and sunk in February 1942.

USS Lexington (CV.2)

Speed 34 knots, 4-shaft steam turbo-electric delivering 210000shp, 47700 tons full displacement, length 888ft, beam 130ft, draught 32ft, armament (1942) eight 127mm (5in) AA, 30 20mm AA, six quadruple 27.94 (1.1in) AA guns, 22 fighters, 36 dive-bombers and 12 torpedo-bombers, 2951 complement.  Build started as a battle-cruiser but changed to an aircraft-carrier.  Completed 1925.  First saw action January 1942.  Torpedo May 1942 and sunk a few hours later.

USS Saratoga (CV.3)

Speed 34 knots, 4-shaft steam turbo-electric delivering 210000shp, 47700 tons full displacement, length 888ft, beam 130ft, draught 32ft, armament (1945) eight twin 127mm (5in) dual purpose, 24 quadruple 40mm bofors, two twin 40mm AA and 16 20mm AA guns, 57 fighters and 18 torpedo-bombers, 3373 complement (1945).  Build started as a battle-cruiser but changed to an aircraft-carrier.  Damaged by torpedoes January 1942, repaired.  Damaged again August 1942, repaired.  Took part in the island hopping drive across the Pacific. Hit by Kamikze attack February 1945.  Retired to training duties after repairs.  Stripped and sunk in July 1945 during series of nuclear tests.

USS Yorktown (CV.5)

Speed 33 knots, 4-shaft geared steam turbines delivering 120000shp, 27500 tons full displacement, length 809ft 6in, beam 83ft, draught 28ft, armament (1942) eight 172mm (5in) AA, four quadruple 27.94mm (1.1n) AA and 16 12.7mm (0.5in) machine-guns, 20 fighters, 38 dive-bombers, 13 torpedo-bombers, 2919 complement.  Commissioned September 1937.  Involved in the Battle of the Coral Sea, attacked and damaged May 1942. Repaired in time for Midway June 1942.  Bombed then torpedoed at Midway.  Then torpedoed by submarine 6th June 1942 and sunk the next morning.

USS Enterprise (CV.6)

Speed 33 knots, 4-shaft geared steam turbines delivering 120000shp, 25500 tons full displacement, length 809ft 6in, beam 114ft, draught 29ft, armament (1942) eight 172mm (5in) AA, four quadruple 27.94mm (1.1in) AA and 16 12.7mm (0.5in) machine guns, 27 fighters, 37 dive-bombers, 15 torpedo-bombers, 2919 complement.  Joined the pacific fleet 1938.  Took part in the Tokyo raid, attacking picket line ships.  Took part in Midway.  Was at Guadalcanal, August 1942, hit by bombs.  Repaired and at Santa Cruz, was hit in October 1942.  Carried on until 1945, had three kamikaze attacks.  Returned to US for repairs, but saw no further service.  Attempts made to preserve as a memorial failed and was sold for scrap in 1958.

USS Hornet (CV.8)

Speed 33 knots, 4-shaft geared steam turbines delivering 120000shp, 29100 tons full displacement, length 827ft 5in, beam 114ft 2in, draught 29ft, armament (1942) eight 127mm (5in) AA, four quadruple 27.94mm (1.1in) AA, 30 20mm AA and nine 12.7mm (0.5in) machine-guns, 36 fighters, 36 dive-bombers and 15 torpedo-bombers, 2919 complement.  Commissioned October 1940.  Embarked the first B-25 bombers on the Tokyo raid.  Took part in the Guadacanal landings and the Battle of Santa Cruz.  Hit by bombs and torpedoes October 1942.  The damage was such the ship was scuttled.  Not all the charges detonated so attempts were made to shell the vessel.  This failed, so was abandoned.  The Japanese could not tow the hulk so they finished the vessel off using two destroyers.

USS Wasp (CV.7)

Speed 29.5 knots, 2-shaft geared steam turbine delivering 75000shp, 20500 tons full displacement, length 741ft 3in, beam 80ft 9in, draught 28ft, armament (1942) eight 127mm (0.5in) AA, four quadruple 27.94 (1.1in) AA and 30 20mm AA guns, 29 fighters, 36 dive-bombers and 15 torpedo-bombers,  2367 complement.  Commissioned April 1941.  Ferried Spitfires to Malta March 1942.   Assigned to the Pacific, Torpedoed in September 1942.  Too badly damaged to recover, so sunk by the US destroyer Lansdowne. 

USS Essex (CV.9)

Speed 33 knots, 4-shaft geared steam turbine delivering 150000shp, 33000 tons full displacement, length 876ft 8in, beam 147ft 8in, draught 28ft 6in, armament (1943) 12 127mm (0.5in) AA, 11 quadruple 40mm  Bofors AA and 44 20mm AA guns, 6 fighters, 36 dive-bombers and 18 torpedo-bombers, 3240 complement.  Reached the Pacific May 1943.  Refitted spring 1944.  Joined Task Force 38.  In November 1944 helped support Leyte Gulf landings.  Attacked by Kamikaze, repairs only took 3 weeks.  Was with the fleet in Tokyo Bay at the Japanese surrender.  Placed in reserve at the end of the war. 

USS Franklin (CV.13)

Speed 33 knots, 4-shaft geared steam turbines delivering 150000shp, 36500 tons full displacement, length 867ft 8in, beam 147ft 8in, draught 30ft 10in, (1945) 74 fighters, 15 dive-bombers, 30 torpedo-bombers, 3240 complement.  Commissioned January 1944.  Attacked by 5 kamikaze in October 1944.  Repaired and returned to service February 1945.  Hit by bombers March 1945.  Repaired, but did not return to service, on reserve from February 1947.

USS Princeton (CVL.23)

31.5 knots, 4-shaft geared steam turbines delivering 100000shp, 14300 tons full displacement, length 622ft 6in, beam 109ft 3in, draught 26ft, armament (1943) two 127mm (0.5in) AA, two quadruple 40mm Bofors AA, nine twin 40mm Bofors AA, 12 20mm AA guns, 24 fighters and 9 torpedo-bombers, 1569 complement.  Converted from light cruiser hulls due to carrier shortage.  Commissioned February 1943.  Took part in the Battle of Leyte Gulf and was bombed in October 1944.  Later after the attack the ship suddenly blew up and was wrecked beyond repair.  The vessel was sunk by the cruiser USS Reno by torpedoes.

USS Bogue (CVE.9)

Speed 18 knots, 1-shaft geared steam turbine delivering 8500shp, 15400 tons full displacement, length 495ft 8in, beam 111ft 6in, draught 26ft, armament (1943) two 127mm (0.5in) AA, four twin 40mm Bofors AA, 12 20mm AA guns, 12 fighters, 12 torpedo-bombers, 890 complement.  Converted merchantman, launched January 1942.  Served mainly in the Atlantic until mid 1945.

USS Sangamon (CVE.26)

Speed 18 knots, 2-shaft geared steam turbines delivering 13500shp, 23875 tons full displacement, length 553ft 6in, beam 114ft 3in, draught 30ft 7in, armament (1942) two 127mm (0.5in) AA, two quadruple 40mm Bofors AA, seven twin 40mm Bofors AA and 21 20mm AA guns, 12 fighters, nine dive-bombers and nine torpedo-bombers, 1100 complement. 

 
USS St Lô (CVE.63)

Speed 19 knots, 2-shaft vertical triple-expansion delivering 9000ihp, 10400 displacement, length 512ft 3in, beam 108ft, draught 22ft 6in, armament (1944) one 127mm (0.5in) AA, eight twin 40mm Bofors AA and 20 20mm AA guns, 17 fighters, 12 torpedo-bombers, 860 complement.  Entered service named as the Midway October 1943   Renamed to St Lô September 1944.  Part of the armada at the Battle of Leyte Gulf.  Bombed and attacked by Kamikaze in October 1944.  Sank an hour after being hit by a Kamikaze.
