Commando Books War Stories in Pictures

For some of us childhood is but a long distant memory, well in fact for most if not all of us childhood was a long time ago. Cast you mind back, if you can, to those far off days and see if you remember any of these comics, 'Warlord' and 'Battle Picture Weekly' or any of these pocket books 'Commando' and 'Battle Picture Library'. If you do then like many of our members you would have had hours of pleasure from reading them.

Even today many of us still enjoy reading them and we are always on the look out for them at military fairs, book fairs and junk fairs. If you are on the hunt for these pocket books you should only need to pay prices ranging between 5p and 25p depending on the condition of the booklet. Even better still the publication 'Commando' is still going strong and can be ordered from WH Smith, if you ask nicely.

These days the good thing about the pocket book is that it will fit in the pocket, so at work they can be carried at work for those morning latrine visits.
The pocket books covered all theatres of the war with a tendency to have more stories on the British than any other nationality. There were stories that centred on other allied countries and those on the axis countries. By 1976 there had been over 1000 publications in the 'Commando' pocket book range. The stories were just about the army, the airforce, navy and marines had stories about them as well. Here a few examples of the types of titles that the books had; 'Riley's Rifle', 'Vow of Vengeance', 'Johnny the Jinx', The Secret Squadron', 'Misfire', 'Pacific Pirates', 'Clash of Eagles', 'Mosquito Strike', 'Bomb New York', 'The Secret Squadron', 'One Man and His Goat', 'Black Squadron' and 'Redcap Rat'.
The question is how many of you still have a hidden cache of these pocket books in your loft or cupboards that has long been forgotten about. If you think you do, then get them out, dust them down, have a good read and relive those childhood memories. If, however, you no longer want to retain ownership of your pocket books then some of our members could be interested in relieving you of the burden, send your enquiries to our e-mail address.

Enjoy those memories and HAPPY READING from the Screaming Eagles Living History Group.
